This page describes what those documents say about groups of people. It cannot tell anyone what their own rash is, and it says nothing about whether a transfer has worked. Your clinic knows your protocol, your medicines and your history; this page does not.

Is an implantation rash a real thing?

Search for the phrase and the results are a tour of the internet’s odd corners: a study of skin reactions over metal implants, a forum about contraceptive implants, a few image sites, and a thread where someone asked whether her rash was implantation and nobody could answer. That last one is the honest summary. Nobody can, because there is nothing to answer with.

Implantation is an embryo of a few hundred cells settling into the lining of the womb. It does not reach the skin, and no hormone it starts producing in the first days is known to cause a rash. The NHS page on signs and symptoms of pregnancy, last reviewed on 31 July 2026, lists twelve early signs, from a missed period to a metallic taste, and not one of them is a rash, itching or any change in the skin. We looked for a clinical source using the term implantation rash and found none.

So the phrase is a symptom list’s invention, not a medical one. The rash itself, though, is often very real, and it usually has a duller explanation sitting in the fridge or the bathroom cabinet. The same is true of most of the feelings people examine in this fortnight, which our page on the honest answer about signs of implantation after transfer goes through one by one.

What do the medicine leaflets say about skin reactions?

The medicines used to support a transfer are the likeliest source of a rash in the two week wait, and their leaflets are unusually frank about it. The table gathers what the UK leaflets and product information say about skin, with the frequency in each document’s own words. Which of these, if any, a person is using is set by their clinic, and nothing here is a suggestion to change anything.

Medicine type

What the document lists for skin

How often, per the document

Source

Estradiol patch (Evorel)

Irritated, itchy skin and rash where the patch is applied

Very common, more than 1 in 10. The skin reactions that are very common are the ones at the spot where something touches or enters the skin: the patch, the injection. A rash that sits exactly under yesterday’s patch has a fairly obvious suspect. And the documents disagree with each other in places. Crinone’s product information puts itching or burning in its common band, while its patient leaflet lists an itchy rash only as an allergic reaction of unknown frequency. We have given both rather than pick the tidier one.

The leaflets also agree on one thing that matters more than any frequency. The Cyclogest leaflet, revised in October 2022, says that a skin rash, which may be itchy, can be a sign of an allergic reaction and that the doctor should be contacted at once. These are what people report, not findings, and nothing in them says what any one rash means.

In an October 2025 thread, a poster two weeks into progesterone in oil injections described itchy, painful welts. Her clinic changed the oil the drug was dissolved in, and she reported no improvement. One reply described a reaction that looked bad and hurt but that their clinic was not concerned about; another described a fever serious enough that the clinic called off the transfer.

In a March 2026 thread, a poster using progesterone suppositories asked about welts on her stomach and near her armpit. Commenters guessed hives; she went to urgent care the same evening, which was the useful part of the thread.

In an October 2026 thread, a poster using vaginal progesterone described irritation and then sores. Her doctor took a swab, and at the time of posting the result was not back. Other commenters suggested medicine swaps, which we do not repeat, because that is a decision for a clinic.

In a May 2026 thread about odd reactions to treatment, several people described rashes or itchy bumps, most of them blamed on stimulation drugs and their injections and one on progesterone suppositories; another described skin burning in the sun while on progesterone in oil.

The range ran from mildly itchy to a clinic changing the plan, and clinics responded in different ways to similar descriptions. Every account blamed a medicine or an injection, and the leaflets above back that up. The year long search for implantation rash turned up general pregnancy rash threads and nothing from an IVF or trying to conceive forum using the term. Even the forums, which are not shy about naming signs, do not seem to believe in this one.

A dated photo is easier for a clinic to read than a memory.

Why does a rash, or no rash, tell you nothing about the result?

Because the cause, in the documented cases, is the medicine, and the medicine is given whether or not an embryo implants. A rash from a patch or an injection turns up in cycles that work and cycles that do not, so it cannot sort one from the other. The same logic runs the other way: a fortnight of clear skin is not a bad sign either. For the same reasons, having no bleeding and no symptoms is not evidence of anything.

There is also a quiet bias in what you can read. People post when something happens to them. Nobody writes a thread titled my skin was completely normal, so the forums fill up with rashes and leave out the far larger number of people who had none, in every kind of outcome. The only thing that answers the question is the blood test your clinic has booked, and our guide to how the beta hCG test works explains what it measures.

When does a rash in the two week wait need a call to the clinic?

This is the part to read slowly, and there are no jokes in it.

Call 999 if a rash comes with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, wheezing, or feeling faint. The NHS anaphylaxis page lists these as signs of a severe allergic reaction, which needs emergency help whatever caused it.

Ring your clinic, or its out of hours number, the same day if a rash spreads beyond the spot where a patch or injection sits, if it comes with a fever, if it blisters or breaks into sores, or if it appears soon after starting a new medicine. The Cyclogest leaflet treats an itchy rash as a possible allergic reaction needing a doctor at once. Do not stop or change a fertility medicine on your own; the clinic decides that, and they would far rather hear from you than not.

For a localised reaction that is bothering you, mention it at the next contact with the clinic rather than waiting until the end of the wait. The NHS page on hives sets out when hives need an urgent GP appointment or NHS 111. Any side effect can also be reported to the MHRA through the Yellow Card scheme, which is how leaflets like the ones above get their numbers.

A log of calls to the clinic

If you ring the clinic about anything in the wait, this keeps the date and what they told you in one place.
