One roundup that ranks says the embedding embryo sets off an inflammatory response that swells the tissues of the throat. It cites nothing. The forum version comes in two flavours that cannot both be true: the body turning its immune system down to accept the embryo, so a sore throat is a good sign, or the immune system attacking the embryo, so it is a bad sign. The same scratch, read as a yes and as a no, with equal certainty.

A two week wait turns every sensation into a candidate, and this one arrives with a story attached. It also has the asymmetry this site keeps pointing at in the honest answer on signs of implantation: the people with a sore throat and a result, either result, write posts. Nobody writes a post titled no sore throat, nothing to report. The lists are built from the people who felt something and typed.

Does the NHS early pregnancy signs list mention a sore throat?

No. The NHS page on the signs and symptoms of pregnancy, last reviewed 31 July 2026, was read line by line for this article on 20 October 2026. It lists twelve early signs: a missed period; a bleed similar to a very light period; feeling or being sick; feeling extremely tired after your usual activities; sore breasts; needing to pee more often; constipation; more vaginal discharge; a metallic taste in your mouth; a sensitivity to certain smells; cravings or a loss of interest in foods; and changes in your mood. The only thing it calls sore is breasts. The words throat, cold, cough and fever do not appear anywhere on the page.

That list is a list of signs of pregnancy, most of them attached to the weeks after a missed period. Nobody official has written a day by day guide to the fortnight before a test, because there is nothing reliable to put in it.

Morning light on a window sill: the dry air of a heated bedroom is one ordinary cause of a sore throat.

Do the progesterone leaflets list a sore throat as a side effect?

Neither of the two vaginal progesterone products most often prescribed in UK treatment names one. The Cyclogest 400 mg pessary leaflet, revised October 2022, carries a separate list of reactions seen in assisted reproduction patients, and the line that comes closest to feeling fluish is an uncommon one, up to 1 in 100: feeling cold or body temperature change or general discomfort. The Utrogestan Vaginal 200 mg leaflet, revised March 2024, lists five effects and gives no frequency for any of them. A leaflet lists what was reported in trials and since, so not listed is not the same as cannot happen, and an effect that is not on the sheet is exactly what the MHRA Yellow Card scheme exists to collect. And the two leaflets disagree with each other more than either disagrees with the forums: Cyclogest lists more than twenty reactions for assisted reproduction patients, Utrogestan lists five. Same hormone, different paperwork. A reader on injections or a gel has a third leaflet again, and the clinic knows which one.

What ordinarily causes a sore throat during a two week wait?

The boring answers, which are the likely ones. The NHS sore throat page says sore throats are usually caused by viruses, like cold or flu, and usually improve within a week. The US CDC puts adults at an average of two to three colds a year. The UKHSA Green Book chapter on influenza says flu activity starts to increase from November and peaks between December and February, and a UKHSA blog post on 8 October 2026 said early signs suggested this season was starting early. A two week wait between October and March is fourteen days spent inside cold season, often in a waiting room, often beside a toddler.

Dry air is the second. The Mayo Clinic lists dryness among the causes of a sore throat: dry indoor air can make the throat feel rough and scratchy, and breathing through the mouth, usually because the nose is blocked, does the same overnight. Central heating comes on in October. So do the morning sore throats that are gone by lunch.

Reflux is the third, and the one with a plausible hormonal thread. Progesterone relaxes smooth muscle, and the ring of muscle at the top of the stomach is smooth muscle. A manometry study in early pregnancy measured that sphincter in women with heartburn at about 11.5 mmHg before a termination and about 17.3 mmHg afterwards, and a review of heartburn in pregnancy describes the same mechanism. The NHS heartburn in pregnancy page attributes the symptom to hormonal changes. Acid that reaches the throat while you lie flat leaves it raw by morning. Whether the progesterone given in a luteal support cycle does this to the same degree was not found measured in any study for this article; it is a reasonable explanation, not a proven one, and persistent heartburn is a clinic question.

A partner making a hot drink during the wait; what to take for a sore throat is a clinic or pharmacist question.

What do people in the wait actually report about a sore throat?

Twenty one accounts were read for this article across four threads on two platforms, two on r/IVF and two on Mumsnet, dated between 2018 and March 2026. They are testimony, not evidence, quoted for what they show about the question rather than for what any of them proves about a cycle.

In an r/IVF thread from October 2025 a woman woke the morning after her second transfer with a stuffy nose and asked how much it would hurt her chances. Among twenty six replies, one woman had a painful throat and congestion through her own transfer and was four weeks pregnant when she wrote; another had a stomach bug two days after a 2023 transfer and has a daughter. The single reply calling the congestion a possible sign of implantation was the lowest scored comment in the thread. In March 2026 the original poster returned to say the cycle had not worked, and that she doubted the cold was why.

In an r/IVF thread from February 2026 a woman on her sixth transfer woke two days afterwards with a scratchy throat and a cough, then ran a temperature. She rang her clinic, which told her what she could use. A commenter reported a sore throat, cough and some fever two days after a 2024 fresh transfer and said it did not affect the outcome. The original poster did not report hers.

A Mumsnet thread started in August 2018 is titled with the question is it all over, by a woman three days past her fifth transfer with a sore throat and swollen glands who had read that it signals an immune problem. One reply called it a good sign. Another had a sore throat in her wait and a positive test, and returned in February 2025, when a new poster had revived the thread with the same fear, to say that child was now five; the next day she wrote that she had a sore throat again and was not pregnant.

In a Mumsnet thread from June 2024 a woman whose frozen transfer had failed described four hours of chills and sweating the evening after it and suspected an immune response. She added that the transfer before, which produced her daughter, had come with a sore throat the day after. Same woman, same family of symptom, one of each result.

The pattern is the question itself, asked in the same words for eight years and answered with two theories that contradict each other and cite nothing. The outcomes sit on both sides of the symptom. Where the accounts agree with the official guidance is the February 2026 poster who rang her clinic about a temperature. Where they part from it is every sentence that reads the throat as a message from the uterus. Nothing in the NHS pages or the leaflets supports that, in either direction.

When is a sore throat or a temperature a reason to ring the clinic?

This section is written straight. The NHS page on pregnancy symptoms you need to get help for, reviewed 24 June 2026, says a high temperature can be a sign of an infection, so it is important to get it checked out, and defines one as a thermometer reading of 38C or above, or feeling hotter than usual and shivering. Cambridge IVF, in its patient information after embryo transfer, approved 19 February 2026, asks patients to contact the unit for heavy bleeding, for tummy pain not relieved by the pain relief they have been told they may take, and for a raised temperature or feeling unwell. Clinics word this differently; the number in your own paperwork is the one that applies, which is why the checklist below asks you to find it first.

For the throat itself, the NHS sore throat page says to get an urgent GP appointment or call 111 for a very high temperature or feeling hot and shivery, for signs of dehydration, or for a weakened immune system, and to call 999 for difficulty breathing or being unable to swallow. What you can take for a sore throat is a question this page does not answer. The same NHS page says some medicines are not safe for everyone, for example in pregnancy, and to ask a pharmacist; during treatment, the clinic that prescribed your protocol is the first call and the pharmacist the second.

A sore throat appears beside positive tests and negative ones in the accounts above, and so does no sore throat at all, which this site has argued before is the fact the forums cannot show you. The same goes for the borrowed term lightning crotch and for the maps of where implantation cramps are supposed to be. It is a throat. In October it is probably a cold. The test date your clinic gave you has not moved.

Before you ring the clinic about a temperature or feeling unwell

Clinic pages ask to hear about a raised temperature or feeling unwell.
